The First National Conference convened by "Nada Centre for Music Therapy, Chennai" on the theme 'Music as a Complementary Medicine' on 09 01 05 at Music Academy, Chennai, India, was the first of its kind in India., which brought people from diverse fields of specialization such as music therapy, alternative medicine, musicology, psychology and medicine under one roof.
 
 


Mrs. Sumathy Sundar, president of Nada Centre for Music Therapy welcomed all the participants for the conference which was convened with a view to disseminate the feelings, knowledge, experience and belief on the prophylactic and therapeutic application of music in general and in indian music in particular by renowned authors, musicians, Psychologists, medical professionals and researching and practising music therapists.

 

She emphasized on popularizing and researching on the therapeutic effects of Indian Music and also to evolve appropriate music, tailor made to the individual taste and requirement, after studying the constitution, personality and expectations and also to introduce appropriate music which could be useful in evolving a life style commensurate with the health of the individuals, their families, organizations and ultimately the nation.

'THERAPEUTIC POSSIBILITIES IN MUSIC FOR TSUNAMI VICTIMS. The Centre released a souvenir and also three books on Music Therapy1. What is Music? 2. Medicinal Music and 3. Raga Therapy and also four CDS 1. Feelings in Music, 2. Rhythms in Music 3. Musical Consciousness and 4. Aesthetic Ideas in Music authored by Dr. T V Sairam.

 

Dr T V Sairam in his key note presentation gave a call to all the top music therapists, music lovers and music enthusiasts assembled for the conference to deliberate more on how best music therapy could be immediately be used to alleviate this human tragedy and also give succour, love, protection and compassion through music by bringing forth the hidden qualities in music and work out a practical program which would be time bound to help the victims of Tsunami.

 

Dr. Pramila Gurumoorthy, HOD, Music Department, University of Madras presented a paper on 'MUSIC THAT HEALS THE MIND AND BODY'. Dr. Mythily T, Director of Music Therapy Department, Apollo Hospitals, Chennai presented a paper on' EFFECTS OF MUSIC THERAPY IN OVERCOMING STRESS', Dr..Ravikannan R., Professor and Head, Department of Surgical Oncology, cancer Insittute, chennai presented a paper on 'NEED FOR EVIDENCE BASED MUSIC THERAPY RESEARCHES' and Mrs. Shalini Somesh, Resource Person, Rehabilitation Centre of India, Coimbatore, also spoke on the effect of Music Therapy on people with special needs.
